Camp to Move from Maiduguri to Auno
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the relocation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp from Maiduguri to Auno in Konduga Local Government Area.
The temporary camp will now be situated at Government Secondary School, Auno, along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Expressway.
Reasons Behind the Relocation
Governor Zulum explained that the decision was based on security concerns, long-term sustainability, and the planned expansion of Maiduguri metropolis and surrounding communities.
Speaking during an inspection of the proposed site alongside the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, and other senior officials, the governor emphasized that the move reflects long-term development planning rather than short-term convenience.
He noted that the state may soon be hosting between 3,000 and 5,000 corps members. Keeping such a large number within Maiduguri, he said, could overstretch existing infrastructure and essential public services.
Strategic Importance of the Auno Axis
The governor highlighted ongoing and upcoming projects around Auno that make the location suitable for the camp.
A 113-kilometre bypass, located about 2.5 kilometres from the proposed site, is expected to enhance accessibility. In addition, a Teaching Hospital scheduled for inauguration within the next few months and the presence of Kashim Ibrahim University along the expressway further increase the area’s strategic value.
Zulum described the Njimtilo–Auno corridor as an emerging hub for institutional and urban development, stressing the need to adopt forward-thinking planning strategies.
Facilities Available at the New Site
The proposed orientation camp site includes:
- Two hostels with eight dormitories
- A dining hall and kitchen
- 26 classrooms with attached offices
- Seven laboratories
- 12 additional rooms
- An overhead water tank
- A functional solar-powered borehole
The classrooms alone can contain between 1,300 and 1,500 corps members at a time.
Security Measures and Assurances
On security, Governor Zulum assured that the location can be effectively fortified. He noted the proximity of security formations and a military checkpoint along the Maiduguri–Auno corridor as additional safeguards.
He also pledged to strengthen perimeter fencing, upgrade security infrastructure, and deploy modern surveillance systems to prevent any form of intrusion.
According to the governor, once fully secured and approved after assessment, the Auno camp will provide a safe and conducive environment for corps members and NYSC officials in Borno State.
