The Governing Council of the University of Abuja has officially denied claims that the institution diverted funds provided by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for its students.
The council, chaired by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, issued the statement following a similar clarification from NELFUND, which had earlier confirmed that there is no verified evidence of fund mismanagement by the university.
Council’s Official Statement
Signed by the Acting Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Malam Sambo Mohammed, the council’s statement emphasized that:
- No NELFUND funds have been diverted, misappropriated, or unlawfully withheld by the university or its officials.
- The university operates strictly within established financial regulations and maintains full accountability in managing all institutional funds.
- The official clarification from NELFUND confirms that there is no factual basis for the alleged diversion, and previous media reports misrepresent the situation.
Adherence to Guidelines and Transparency
The council highlighted that the university has consistently followed all regulations governing the disbursement and utilization of intervention funds, including those from NELFUND.
It urged the public and stakeholders to disregard misleading reports suggesting mismanagement.
Endorsement of University Management
Reiterating its confidence in the institution’s leadership, the council praised the management team led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirming the university’s commitment to:
- Transparency
- Due process
- Institutional integrity
This statement strengthens the university’s position and reassures students and stakeholders that NELFUND funds are being properly administered for the intended educational purposes.
