The University of Abuja has announced the dismissal of 28 students over a range of serious misconduct cases, including cult-related activities, examination fraud, drug offences, and threats to personal safety within the campus community.
The decision followed deliberations at the university’s 191st Senate meeting, where members considered the recommendations presented by the Student Disciplinary Committee after extensive investigations.
Offences Range from Academic Fraud to Criminal Conduct
According to an official communication issued by the institution’s Directorate of Information and University Relations, the students were found responsible for grave violations of university regulations. The offences reportedly included physical assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, manipulation of O’Level results submitted during admission processing, as well as possession and use of hard drugs.
University authorities described the actions as clear breaches of institutional rules and ethical standards expected of members of the academic community.
Certificates Revoked, Some Students Cleared
In addition to the expulsions, the Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates earlier issued to 15 former students who allegedly ignored repeated summons by the disciplinary panel.
Meanwhile, nine students were cleared of allegations after investigations found insufficient evidence against them. Another 33 students were issued formal warnings for misconduct such as involvement in hostel racketeering, fighting, and related infractions.
Leadership Stresses Commitment to Academic Integrity
The Vice-Chancellor, who presided over the Senate session, reaffirmed the university’s firm stance against indiscipline. He emphasized that protecting academic standards and ensuring campus safety remain non-negotiable priorities.
He explained that while disciplinary measures are necessary to preserve order, the institution is equally focused on guiding students toward responsible behavior and academic excellence.
The university leadership also disclosed ongoing efforts to strengthen counselling services, student orientation programmes, and engagement initiatives aimed at preventing future violations.
Strengthening Campus Discipline
The recent actions underscore the university’s determination to confront misconduct decisively, particularly amid growing concerns about cultism, examination malpractice, and other criminal activities within higher education institutions.
Management reiterated its resolve to uphold regulations without compromise and to maintain a secure, orderly, and supportive learning environment for all members of the university community.
