Below are recognized higher institutions in Akwa Ibom State:
1. University of Uyo (UNIUYO)
The largest and most popular institution in the state, UNIUYO evolved from the University of Cross River State in 1991 when it was taken over by the Federal Government. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programmes in arts, sciences, law, medicine, and engineering.
2. Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi
Part of the new set of federal universities of technology approved by the Nigerian government. Its focus is on science, technology, engineering, and innovation to drive national development.

Founded by the Churches of Christ, Obong University is one of the pioneering private universities in Akwa Ibom. It offers degree programmes in management sciences, natural sciences, and arts. Known for its values of discipline, faith, and academic excellence.
4. Ritman University
Established by Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, Ritman University focuses on entrepreneurship, business, and leadership development. It offers degree programmes across social sciences, management, and science-based disciplines.
5. Topfaith University
One of the newest private universities in the state, Topfaith University is equipped with modern facilities. It provides degree programmes in management, computing, social sciences, and sciences, with a strong emphasis on global competitiveness.
6. Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron
Nigeria’s foremost maritime institution, established in 1979. It provides training in marine engineering, nautical science, maritime transport, and logistics. Graduates are equipped to serve in Nigeria’s growing maritime and shipping industries.
7. Heritage Polytechnic
Formerly known as the Christian Polytechnic, Heritage Polytechnic is one of the most popular private polytechnics in Nigeria. It offers ND and HND programmes in sciences, engineering, business, and technology.
8. Federal Polytechnic, Ukana
One of the newer federal polytechnics in Nigeria, established to expand technical and vocational training. It offers ND and HND courses in business, sciences, and engineering fields.
9. Uyo City Polytechnic
A private polytechnic that provides ND and HND programmes in technology, business, and social sciences. It is known for practical training aimed at preparing students for entrepreneurship.
10. Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit
This teacher-training institution produces NCE graduates and offers degree programmes in affiliation with universities. It has a strong reputation for preparing qualified teachers for primary and secondary schools.
11. Foundation College of Technology, Ikot Ekpene
A growing tertiary institution providing ND and HND programmes in technology, business, and vocational courses.
12. Samuel Bill Theological College
Founded by the Qua Iboe Church, this college specializes in Christian theology, biblical studies, and pastoral training. It has produced many notable ministers and missionaries in Nigeria.
13. School of Nursing, Uyo
Offers basic nursing and midwifery training, producing registered nurses (RNs) and midwives. It serves as a feeder for healthcare institutions within and beyond the state.
