Lagos State University (LASU) Receives NUC Approval for Four New Computing Programmes for 2025/2026 Session

LASU

Lagos State University (LASU) has officially received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to launch four new full-time undergraduate programmes in the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology. This development expands LASU’s academic offerings and strengthens its commitment to producing graduates who can thrive in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy.

The approval followed a recent NUC resource verification visit, where panels of experts inspected LASU’s staff strength, classrooms, laboratories, and learning facilities to confirm readiness for the new programmes.

Details of the NUC Approval

The approval was communicated in a letter dated 3rd November 2025, signed by Mr. Abubakar M. Girei, Acting Director of Academic Planning, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary.

The letter confirms that LASU has met the required standards to run the newly accredited programmes beginning from the 2025/2026 academic session.

NUC’s verification team checked essential academic resources, including:

  • Qualification and availability of teaching staff
  • Classrooms, computer labs, and learning spaces
  • Tools, equipment, and academic materials

At this stage, the approval covers only full-time study modes.

New Computing and IT Programmes at LASU

Starting from the 2025/2026 session, LASU will offer these four specialised degree programmes:

✔ B.Sc. Cyber Security

Trains students to protect networks, systems, and digital infrastructure from cyberattacks.

✔ B.Sc. Software Engineering

Focuses on software design, development, testing, and deployment for real-life applications.

✔ B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Explores computer systems, networks, and communication technologies used across industries.

✔ B.Sc. Data Science

Prepares students to collect, interpret, and apply data insights for decision-making in business, government, and other sectors.

These programmes align with global digital trends and open doors to high-demand tech careers in Nigeria and abroad.

What the NUC Approval Means for LASU Students

With these new additions, LASU students now have more targeted study options beyond general Computer Science. The programmes offer:

  • Clearer academic pathways in specialised computing fields
  • Industry-relevant skills that match employer needs
  • Opportunities for advanced study in fast-growing tech disciplines
  • Assurance that the courses meet approved national standards

This move strengthens LASU’s position as a leading university for technology education.

Study Mode and Start Date

  • Mode of Study: Full-time only
  • Start Date: 2025/2026 academic session

Students applying for LASU admission in the upcoming session can select these new programmes once the university releases its official admission guidelines.

Any future expansion such as part-time or online formats will require fresh NUC approval.

LASU’s Growing Commitment to Technology Education

The introduction of these four computing programmes reflects LASU’s continued investment in technology-driven learning. The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology is steadily evolving into a hub for training digitally skilled graduates who can contribute to Nigeria’s innovation goals.

These new programmes meet global trends in:

  • Cybersecurity
  • Software systems
  • ICT infrastructure
  • Data-driven decision-making

They prepare students for relevant roles in Lagos, Nigeria, and international tech markets.

Closing Thoughts

By securing NUC approval for four new full-time computing programmes, LASU has taken a bold step in expanding access to quality tech education. The university has demonstrated readiness through proper staffing, infrastructure, and academic resources.

As the 2025/2026 session approaches, students eager to build careers in cyber security, software engineering, ICT, or data science now have fresh opportunities at LASU to begin their journey into the digital future.
