The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has cleared the air over reports surrounding its MBBS programme, confirming that the university has only paused admissions for one academic session and has not suspended or discontinued the programme.
According to the university, the temporary halt applies strictly to the 2026/2027 academic session, after which normal admissions into the MBBS programme will resume.
What FUTA Announced
In an official notice dated February 3, 2026, and signed by the Registrar, Mr. C. O. Adeleye, FUTA informed prospective applicants that it would not admit MBBS students for the 2026/2027 session alone. Candidates who had selected FUTA for Medicine and Surgery were therefore advised to change their institution of choice to avoid admission complications.
The announcement initially caused anxiety among candidates and parents, with some interpreting it as a total suspension of the medical programme. FUTA, however, has since issued a clear clarification to dispel those fears.
MBBS Programme Not Scrapped, FUTA Says
Responding to widespread speculation, the university categorically denied claims that its MBBS programme had been discontinued.
FUTA emphasized that the programme remains fully active and functional, describing reports of its suspension as inaccurate and misleading.
According to the university, the MBBS programme is “intact, operational, and has not been suspended or put on hold in any form.” The decision, it stressed, is temporary, deliberate, and limited to one session only.
Why FUTA Is Pausing Admissions for One Session
In a separate press statement released by Adegbenro Adebanjo of the Directorate of Corporate Communication and Protocol, FUTA explained that the pause is aimed at strengthening the academic and clinical training structure for existing students.
The university noted that suspending admissions for one session will help ensure:
- A more stable and seamless academic calendar
- Improved coordination of clinical training
- Smoother operational and logistical planning
The statement explained that the move is designed to enhance training quality, not to weaken or abandon the programme.
FUTA also warned the public against misinformation, stating that any suggestion of programme discontinuation is false and contrary to the facts.
Teaching Hospital Partnership Remains Strong
FUTA further reassured stakeholders that its partnership with its Teaching Hospital remains intact. Clinical training for current MBBS students continues without interruption.
The university highlighted that the Teaching Hospital was established through collective efforts involving:
- The Federal Government
- Ondo State Government
- Traditional institutions
- Other strategic stakeholders
FUTA expressed appreciation to several key contributors, including:
- President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
- Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa
- Professor Mohammed Ali Pate
- Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR)
- Elder statesman Pa Reuben Fasoranti
- Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka
Message to Prospective MBBS Candidates
Prospective students who intended to study Medicine and Surgery at FUTA for the 2026/2027 session have been advised to update their JAMB choices promptly.
However, the university reassured applicants and the general public that admissions into the MBBS programme will resume in the following academic session.
FUTA reaffirmed its long-term commitment to medical education, noting that the institution remains focused on producing skilled healthcare professionals for national development.
Final Takeaway
The temporary pause in MBBS admissions at FUTA is a strategic reset, not an end to the programme. The university’s clarification is intended to calm public concerns and reaffirm confidence in its medical training pathway.
For FUTA, the priority remains quality education, effective clinical training, and sustainable programme delivery.
