The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a new mandatory policy for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration process.
Under this updated guideline, all candidates must now declare their current admission status specifying whether they are already students of any tertiary institution in Nigeria or abroad.
This move is part of JAMB’s ongoing efforts to curb impersonation and examination malpractice, issues that were significantly reported during the 2025 UTME cycle.
Why JAMB Introduced the New Rule
According to JAMB’s 2025 UTME Infraction Report, over 90% of candidates caught in malpractice cases were already students of other tertiary institutions.
These individuals reportedly exploited the UTME system to gain unauthorized admissions or manipulate academic records.
To prevent such abuses, JAMB has directed that a mandatory declaration field be added to the 2026 UTME registration form, where every applicant must accurately indicate their studentship status before completing registration.
Penalties for False Declarations
JAMB has issued strict warnings against providing false or misleading information during registration. Candidates found guilty may face the following penalties:
- Cancellation of UTME registration
- Withdrawal of any previous admission offer
- Possible legal prosecution under Nigerian examination laws
This measure reinforces JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on any form of malpractice or dishonesty in the admission process.
JAMB’s Commitment to Transparent Admissions
The Board emphasized that the UTME is strictly for fresh admission seekers. Therefore, individuals already enrolled in any tertiary institution must not re-register for the exam without disclosing their current status.
JAMB reaffirmed its mission to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s education system. This new policy, according to the Board, will strengthen public trust in the admission process and uphold the integrity of Nigerian higher education.
Closing Note
With this development, JAMB continues its proactive mission to safeguard the credibility of the UTME. All 2026 UTME applicants are strongly advised to follow the new registration guidelines carefully and declare their true admission status to avoid disqualification or legal consequences.
