BUK Students to Benefit from ₦60 Million Scholarship Sponsored by OPay

The Bayero University, Kano (BUK) community has a reason to celebrate! On Tuesday, 9th September 2025, OPay Digital Services Limited launched a groundbreaking ₦60 million scholarship programme for BUK students. This initiative is aimed at reducing financial burdens on students while promoting academic excellence across the university.

The historic programme was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, in partnership with the Students’ Union Government (SUG) led by Abdullahi Usman Baba and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Details of the OPay Scholarship

The scholarship programme is part of OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda, designed to empower Nigerian youths through education. Under this initiative:

  • BUK is one of 20 universities selected nationwide to benefit from the scheme.
  • ₦300,000 will be awarded annually to 20 students from BUK over the next 10 years, amounting to a total of ₦60 million.
  • The programme is part of a 10-year commitment by OPay to support academic achievement and student welfare in Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, praised OPay for recognising BUK as a key beneficiary. He encouraged students to use the opportunity wisely, emphasizing the scholarship’s potential to positively transform their academic journey.

OPay’s Commitment to Education

Mr. Itoro Udo, OPay’s CSR Manager, highlighted the fintech company’s dedication to supporting young people in Nigeria. With over 16 million active users nationwide, OPay aims to provide educational support that fosters talent and opportunity among students.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, also described the intervention as “timely and highly impactful,” noting that many students at BUK face financial constraints that can hinder their academic progress.

How BUK Students Can Benefit

Selected students will receive notifications through official BUK channels, SUG announcements, and NANS communication platforms. Beneficiaries are encouraged to maintain excellent academic performance to remain eligible for the yearly award.

This initiative represents a milestone in public-private partnership for education, showcasing how collaboration between universities, student unions, and corporate entities can empower students and enhance learning opportunities.
