About Film Lab Africa 2026

Following the success of its 2023–2024 pilot phase, Film Lab Africa returns in 2026 with a more focused and refined structure. This new edition places strong emphasis on:

  • Encouraging collaborative projects between Nigeria and the United Kingdom
  • Expanding the visibility of African stories on global platforms
  • Promoting fair and inclusive growth within the creative industry

2026 Theme: Story Lab

The 2026 edition is themed “Story Lab.” It focuses on scripted episodic content for television and screen. This approach allows writers, directors, and producers to explore storytelling within both creative and professional industry settings.

Participants will work on projects that bridge creative expression with real-world production and distribution opportunities.

Programme Structure

Film Lab Africa 2026 is delivered across six major phases, designed to guide participants from idea development to production and distribution.

1. Scriptwriters’ Online Training

  • 30 scriptwriters selected through an open call
  • Online workshops covering storytelling, character development, episodic structure, pitching, and sustainable writing practices

2. Writers’ Residency and Story Lab

  • 15 writers shortlisted for a physical residency in Lagos or London
  • Intensive writing sessions with close mentorship from Nigerian and UK industry experts

3. Filmmakers’ Online Training

  • 60 directors and producers selected
  • Training sessions on episodic production, pitching to broadcasters, inclusive storytelling, and climate-focused narratives

4. Production and Grant Support

  • Selected filmmakers receive production grants to create pilot episodes
  • Support includes script development assistance, funding guidance, and professional mentoring

5. Showcasing and Distribution

  • Completed projects showcased locally and internationally
  • Opportunities include screenings, film festivals, and market pitching events

6. Industry Engagement and Advocacy

  • Film clubs and creative community activities
  • Industry networking and advocacy initiatives
  • Support for sustainable creative careers

Who Can Apply

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Have produced at least one web project and one non-web project with credited roles
  • Possess a script ready for development and production
  • Submit a production bible
  • Complete the British Council e-learning programme before final selection
