The Borno State Government has unveiled plans to recruit 1,000 additional teachers as part of a renewed push to improve learning outcomes and expand access to quality education across the state’s public secondary schools.

The large-scale recruitment exercise will see the new teachers posted to 139 operational secondary schools, with particular attention given to rural and underserved communities, in line with the education reform agenda of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

Rebuilding Education After Years of Conflict

Speaking in Maiduguri on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Abba Wakilbe, explained that the initiative is designed to address teacher shortages, especially in newly built schools, and to accelerate the recovery of the education sector following years of insurgency-related disruptions.

According to him, the recruitment will also absorb eight teachers recently granted automatic employment in Southern Borno, ensuring they are fully integrated into the state’s education workforce.

Transparent Recruitment and Focus on Skills Education

Wakilbe assured residents that the recruitment process will be handled with fairness, openness, and professionalism, stressing that the Secondary School Education Board (SSEB) has been mandated to conduct a credible exercise.

He further disclosed that the state government is planning a separate intake of specialised Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) instructors, aimed at strengthening practical, skill-based learning and preparing students for employment and self-reliance.

Call for Commitment to Rural Service

Also speaking, SSEB Chairman, Yusufu Gana Balami, pledged that merit will guide the selection process. He encouraged qualified candidates particularly those ready to work in hard-to-reach and rural areas to take advantage of the opportunity and contribute to rebuilding education in the state.

Support for Inclusive and Vulnerable Education

Beyond teacher recruitment, the Borno State Government has also approved over ₦28.6 million in financial support for Future Assured College, an institution dedicated to educating children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Wakilbe praised the school’s founder, Aisha Buhari, for her dedication to the welfare and education of vulnerable children, describing the initiative as a model of inclusive education.

The Chairman of SUBEB, Bulama Kagu, alongside the school’s head, Abdullahi Musa, welcomed the intervention, noting that it would significantly expand learning opportunities for less privileged children across the state.

A Renewed Commitment to Education

With the recruitment of new teachers, investment in skills education, and targeted support for vulnerable learners, the Borno State Government says it is reinforcing its long-term commitment to rebuilding a resilient, inclusive, and high-quality education system for all.
