Babcock University has announced a sweeping update to its student appearance policies, introducing tougher standards on grooming and dressing as the institution prepares for upcoming examinations.
The new directive applies across all campuses and is aimed at strengthening discipline, promoting modesty, and ensuring uniform conduct among students.
The policy update was made public through an official notice released on Wednesday and signed by the Vice President for Student Development, Olanivi Arije.
University Scraps All Hair-Pass Approvals
As part of the changes, Babcock University has completely withdrawn the use of hair-pass permits, which some students previously relied on as exemptions for restricted hairstyles.
According to the university, these permits have no legal or institutional backing. Management made it clear that hair-pass documents do not authorize students to keep hairstyles that fall outside the university’s approved standards.
With immediate effect, the institution has prohibited the issuance, presentation, or recognition of hair-pass permits in any form.
Students currently holding such documents have been instructed to stop using them without delay.
The notice further warned that any student caught presenting or relying on a hair-pass will be subjected to investigation and appropriate disciplinary action if found guilty of breaching university regulations.
The enforcement of this policy will begin at the start of the second semester in January, and it will be applied consistently across the university.
New Hair and Grooming Expectations for Students
The revised guidelines spell out clear expectations for both male and female students.
For Male Students
Male students are required to keep their hair clean, simple, and well-groomed. Hairstyles considered excessive, rough, or untidy are not permitted. The university has also ruled out beards and dreadlocks, stating that such styles do not align with its grooming standards.
For Female Students
Female students are expected to avoid hairstyles that are regarded as extreme, inappropriate, or inconsistent with modest appearance. The university emphasized that while personal expression is acknowledged, it must remain within acceptable institutional boundaries.
Stricter Dress Code Now in Force
Beyond hair and grooming, Babcock University has also reinforced its rules on student dressing.
Clothing items that are now strictly prohibited include:
- Tight or body-fitting outfits
- Sleeveless tops and dresses during official academic hours
- Sagging trousers
- Oversized, excessively long, baggy, or boot-cut trousers
The regulations apply to lecture halls, examination venues, and other formal university settings.
In addition, students are not allowed to combine scarves with official academic or corporate wear during designated periods. A formal and professional appearance is expected at all times when required.
The university also listed bubu, danshiki, joggers, sportswear, and walk-out clothing as unacceptable during specified academic activities.
Zero Tolerance as Compliance Becomes Mandatory
University management made it clear that the rules will be enforced without exceptions. Students found with prohibited clothing or hairstyles will face disciplinary consequences.
The statement emphasized that ignorance of the policy will not be accepted as an excuse. Appeals and justifications will not be entertained once enforcement begins.
Students have therefore been advised to return to campus fully compliant with the updated regulations.
Final Note to Students
Babcock University has urged all students to adjust quickly to the new standards. According to management, adherence to the grooming and dressing code is not optional and reflects the institution’s core values of discipline and order.
Full compliance, the university stressed, is expected from every student moving forward.
