The Federal Government has announced a major policy shift: by 2027, only secondary schools with Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certified teachers will be accredited as centres for WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and SAISSCE examinations.
This directive was issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in a memo to the TRCN Registrar/Chief Executive, as part of the government’s plan to strengthen professionalism and quality in Nigeria’s education system.
“Uncertified Teachers? No Accreditation”
According to the minister, any school whose teachers are not duly registered and licensed by TRCN will automatically lose its accreditation status:
- March 2027 – WAEC (WASSCE) enforcement begins.
- May 2027 – NABTEB enforcement begins.
- June 2027 – NECO and SAISSCE enforcement begins.
“Any school whose teachers are not duly registered and licensed with TRCN shall be disqualified from serving as an examination centre,” the minister stressed.
Compliance Timeline for Schools
To allow schools to adjust, a two-year compliance window has been provided:
- By 2026: Schools must achieve at least 75% TRCN compliance.
- By 2027: Schools must reach 100% compliance or face disqualification.
Both state governments and private school owners have been directed to ensure their teachers obtain TRCN certification within this period.
