Southern Delta University Reschedules Convocation Ceremony

SOUTHERN DELTA UNIVERSITY

The Management of Southern Delta University has officially announced a change in the date of its forthcoming Convocation Ceremony, including the Awards of Prizes and Commissioning of Projects.

Originally scheduled for Friday, 27th February 2026, the grand finale will now hold on: Saturday, 28th February 2026

The adjustment follows a comprehensive review by the university’s Ceremonials Committee to improve logistics and ensure better coordination of the high-profile activities planned for the event.

Reason for the Rescheduling

The date change was primarily influenced by the need to accommodate the University Visitor,
Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori, whose presence is central to:

  • Formal validation and conferment of degrees
  • Commissioning of state-funded infrastructural projects
  • Participation in key ceremonial proceedings

Key Objectives Behind the Shift

  • Enhanced Participation: A Saturday ceremony enables alumni, families, and stakeholders to attend without weekday work constraints.
  • Alignment with Visitor’s Schedule: Ensures smooth coordination with the State Government’s official engagements.
  • Improved Traffic & Logistics: A weekend timeframe reduces congestion and improves crowd management.

What Remains Unchanged

Although the date has been adjusted, the structure and substance of the ceremony remain intact. All prior arrangements and assignments communicated to staff and graduands are still valid.

Highlights of the Convocation Programme

1️ Commissioning of Projects

Before the academic procession begins, the University Visitor will commission newly completed:

  • Laboratories
  • Lecture theatres
  • Administrative buildings

These projects underscore the university’s commitment to strengthening research and academic infrastructure.

2️ Academic Procession

The traditional procession of the University Council, Senate, and Congregation will mark the formal commencement of the ceremony. All participants must appear in approved academic regalia.

3️ Conferment of Degrees & Awards

The ceremony will formally graduate the 2024/2025 cohort, including:

  • First degrees
  • Postgraduate degrees
  • Special academic prizes
  • Honorary degree recognitions

Important Instructions for Graduands

To ensure a seamless ceremony, graduating students are advised to:

  •  Collect Academic Gowns from Faculty Officers before the revised deadline and wear them according to official dress regulations.
  •  Be Seated by 8:30 a.m. at the Convocation Arena.
  •  Comply with Security & Protocol Guidelines to maintain order and decorum.

The University Management appreciates the understanding and cooperation of staff, students, and guests. The adjustment is intended to deliver a more prestigious, inclusive, and well-coordinated convocation ceremony befitting the institution’s academic stature.
