The management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has announced a final extension of the online course registration deadline for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The decision was communicated through an official memo released by the Office of the Registrar on February 2, 2026, and described by the university as a special concession aimed at assisting students who are yet to complete their registration due to financial, technical, or administrative challenges.
According to the directive, all undergraduate students now have until Saturday, February 14, 2026, to complete their course registration without penalty.
Why Course Registration Matters at FUTO
At FUTO, course registration is more than a routine requirement, it is the foundation of a student’s academic record. Registration data determines:
- Lecture and laboratory allocation
- Examination eligibility
- Generation of exam broadsheets and photo cards
Without proper registration, a student is considered inactive for the semester, regardless of fee payment.
The Registrar’s memo emphasizes that this extension is a final opportunity for students to regularize their status before penalties are enforced.
Key Dates Students Must Note
Normal Registration Period (Ends February 14, 2026)
Students who complete their registration on or before Saturday, February 14 will not incur any additional charges. During this period, students are advised to:
- Confirm that school fees have been fully paid
- Check that all registered courses are correct
- Ensure credit units align with departmental requirements
Late Registration Period (Begins February 16, 2026)
From Monday, February 16, 2026, the university portal will automatically activate late registration mode.
- A non-refundable late registration fee of ₦10,000 will be added to any student account that has not completed registration
- The penalty applies immediately and cannot be appealed
University management stressed that the fee is meant to discourage delays that disrupt academic planning.
Directives to Faculties and Departments
To ensure full awareness of the extension, the Registrar has instructed:
- Deans and Heads of Departments to intensify student sensitization
- Departments to monitor registration progress and identify students yet to complete the process
- Official communication channels such as notice boards and faculty WhatsApp groups to be fully utilized
Students are therefore advised not to rely on assumptions or rumors, as this extension has been clearly communicated across the university.
Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Course Registration
Step 1: Confirm School Fee Payment
Students must ensure their Remita payment status shows “Successful” on the portal. Any payment pending beyond 24 hours should be reported to the Bursary Department with proof of payment.
Step 2: Register Courses Carefully
Students should:
- Register all core courses required for their level
- Select approved electives only
- Ensure total credit units fall within the allowed range
Exceeding or falling short of the approved credit load may invalidate registration.
Step 3: Submit and Print Registration Slip
After selecting courses:
- Click “Submit” (saving alone is not enough)
- Print the Course Registration Slip (Form 02)
This slip is mandatory for lecture attendance and examinations.
“No Registration, No Examination” Policy Still Applies
FUTO reaffirmed its strict No Registration, No Examination policy. Students who fail to complete registration:
- Will not appear on examination lists
- Will be excluded from Continuous Assessment (CA) and semester exams
- May lose the entire academic semester
The extension is therefore meant to eliminate excuses for non-compliance.
Important Advice for Final-Year and Transfer Students
This extension is especially critical for:
- Final-year students, who must ensure all carry-over courses are properly registered to avoid delayed graduation or NYSC mobilization
- Direct Entry and transfer students, who may still be resolving matriculation or transcript issues
Students in these categories are urged to complete registration early to avoid last-minute complications.
Final Reminder to Students
The university described this extension as a final opportunity for students to regularize their academic records without financial penalty. Once the deadline passes, the ₦10,000 late fee becomes unavoidable.
FUTO management has urged all students to take responsibility for their academic progress by completing registration promptly and correctly.
By Saturday, February 14, 2026, regular registration will officially close, allowing the university to focus on lectures, assessments, and examinations for the semester.
