The University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT) in Bayelsa State has recorded a major academic milestone following official approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce a range of new postgraduate programmes.
This development expands the university’s academic scope and positions it as an emerging center for advanced research and professional training within the Niger Delta and beyond.
How the Approval Was Earned
The NUC’s decision followed a comprehensive evaluation carried out by a delegation of academic assessors and regulatory officers. The visit focused on verifying whether the university had the capacity to support postgraduate teaching and research at the highest levels.
During the assessment, attention was given to:
- Academic Staff Strength: Confirmation that experienced Professors and senior lecturers are available to supervise postgraduate and doctoral research.
- Facilities and Equipment: Review of laboratories, ICT centers, and creative studios, particularly for science, computing, and Theatre and Film Studies.
- Library and Digital Resources: Examination of access to scholarly journals, research databases, and postgraduate reference materials.
