UNILAG Introduces New Rules for Film and Skit Productions on Campus

UNILAG

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced a new directive aimed at regulating the increasing number of film shoots, skit recordings, and other media productions taking place on its campus. The institution expressed concern over the growing trend of content creators filming in hostels, lecture halls, and other sensitive facilities without official permission.

This move has become necessary due to issues relating to security, disruption of academic activities, and the preservation of the University’s public image.

Why UNILAG Is Implementing This Policy

In a statement signed by Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the Communication Unit, the University revealed that the management had observed a surge in unauthorized cinematographic activities. These include social media skits, promotional shoots, and commercial films.

According to the statement, some of these unsanctioned recordings:

  • Disrupt the peace within academic and residential areas
  • Pose security risks to students and staff
  • Portray the University in a negative or misleading manner

UNILAG emphasized that the institution has established protocols to protect the integrity of its environment, as well as the safety of everyone who lives, studies, or works on campus.

Clearance Now Required Before Any Filming

Moving forward, any form of video production on campus must receive formal approval from the UNILAG Communication Unit. This requirement applies to:

  • Students creating content for social media or school projects
  • Staff members involved in multimedia activities
  • External content creators, filmmakers, and brands collaborating with students

Individuals or groups intending to record must visit the Communication Unit located on the 7th Floor of the Senate House, Akoka, to obtain necessary authorization.

The University warned that failure to comply with this directive will be considered a violation of institutional rules and may attract disciplinary actions or sanctions.

UNILAG Supports Creativity  But With Responsibility

Although the directive introduces restrictions, UNILAG maintains that it is not against creativity or student innovation. Instead, the University aims to ensure that filming activities align with:

 Academic standards
  Safety and decorum
  The University’s reputable image

The management encourages students to keep expressing their talents in responsible ways while respecting campus policies put in place for collective good.

Protecting Campus Integrity in a Digital Age

Many Nigerian universities are taking similar steps to regulate the use of school environments for media productions. UNILAG believes this policy will help maintain a balance between supporting creative minds and protecting educational spaces from exploitation.

As the entertainment and content creation industry continues to rise, especially in Lagos State, the University wants to ensure that its facilities are not misused for commercial gains or harmful portrayals.

With this directive, UNILAG positions itself as a forward-thinking institution that promotes innovation while upholding academic excellence, discipline, and integrity.
